According to an old legend, Kněževes was founded in the 10th century by Princess Libuše—the famous Libuše linked to the founding of Prague. During the village’s construction, a frog appeared on the site, and since then, a frog has been featured in the town’s coat of arms.
The first written record of Kněževes dates back to 1327, from a charter of King John of Bohemia for the Teplá Monastery. For centuries, it remained primarily an agricultural village until it was granted town status in 2007. Today, it covers 12 km² and has 1,018 residents.
